Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
After reading the book in its entirety, we watched a movie based on the novel. The students quickly found that like lots of book-based movies, this movie did not follow the original plot line to the T. It stayed true to most of the characters and events, however.

Before reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, we talked about what dialect is and included some examples. Here is a link to a dialect quiz we took as a class.

To help understand the setting of the novel, students were able to learn more about the "separate but equal" policy. Ask your student about the assignment which, based on their height, they were able to use an iPad or an eye pad to find the answers. The students (especially with the eye pads) found out very quickly how separate did not usually mean equal.
